Abstract
This study examines the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and digital learning tools on cognitive skills and academic motivation among higher education students. As tools such as ChatGPT and Grammarly become increasingly prevalent in academic settings, questions arise regarding their influence on critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and independent learning capabilities. Conducted at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) - Muscat, this research employs primary data collection to analyze students' usage patterns, levels of dependency, and perceived impacts on learning outcomes. The study addresses a significant research gap within the Omani higher education context by providing empirical evidence on AI tool adoption and its cognitive implications. Findings contribute to ongoing scholarly discourse on responsible AI integration in educational environments and offer practical guidance for educators and policymakers. The research aligns with Oman Vision 2040's objectives of cultivating a digitally competent and self-reliant student population capable of navigating technology-enhanced learning landscapes. Recommendations emphasize balanced AI adoption strategies that enhance learning effectiveness while preserving essential cognitive development and critical thinking skills.
